If you are an animal rescuer and you have been approached by Frann Martins of Canada's Frantic Films / Kew Media, this post is to share a first-hand perspective WA2S Films (an award-winning media non profit focused on helping rescue non profits) gleaned from a very brief relationship - a contract had been signed - and then Frann Martins showed her true colors.First Contact With Frann Martins & Frantic FilmsM2 INC <[email protected]> 4/19/16 Great chatting with you earlier. There are a couple of concepts I'd like to explore.....The first would be hosted by a fellow named Steve Greig (aka wolfgang2242 on Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/wolfgang2242/?hl=en) , each week Steve would detail the latest Hope for Paws rescue(s) and introduce viewers to the rescue taking the dogs. The show would bring the viewer along on the journey of the dogs beginning with being rescued by Eldad. After watching the rescue the viewers will be emotionally engaged and will want to see the outcome....Will the dog survive? Will he be okay if he does? Will the dog be safe? Working title - DOG RESCUE 911 The second show I see as being a little grittier or raw with organizations such as ARM as well as various animal control agencies. This show would be hosted by a law enforcement type individual and look more at bringing attention to the abuses that go on as well as bringing the abusers to justice. It will show the dogs being taken out of harms way or there may be cases where animals have succumbed to their injuries/neglect. Either way the show will bring focus on getting these "owners" arrested. At the end of each episode the host will provide an update on the animals....Something like this...... Picture of the dog when rescued, as the pictures fades to the happy, healthy dog a voice over begins telling us about the dogs injuries, what's gone on since rescue and how they're doing now. It will also show a picture of the Offender (if we can't do a picture of them then perhaps a photo of their house or something related to them) and an update if they've been brought to justice or not. Working title - ANIMAL JUSTICE Look forward to hearing your thoughts. Best Regards - Frann Martins 204 509 6956 M2 INC <[email protected]> Tom McPhee <[email protected]>4/20/16 to M2 Dear Frann, Thank you so much for reaching out. I wish to clarify your email, if I may. Who are these series for? Have they been commissioned? Is there a primary producer in place? What is WA2S Films' role? Who is paying production? If I have answers to these questions we can have a more meaningful dialogue about the content of your email. I look forward to hearing back from you in your time. Most Sincerely, Tom McPhee Executive Director 818.561.5109 World Animal Awareness Society 501c3 non profit media company - EIN 27-1918794 Website = www.WA2S.org Facebook = www.facebook.com/WA2S.org Youtube = www.youtube.com/user/WA2Sorg A 2015 certified "Best In America" Charity A 2015 certified "Top Rated" Non Profit M2 INC <[email protected]> 4/20/16 Hello Tom - Thank you for your reply. Primarily I work with Frantic Films (www.franticfilms.com) although I have worked with people at Spectrum and 44blue. I bring them concepts that are in various stages of development - most ideas I'll pitch to them rather informally and if they're interested I'll move forward with developing the concept to the point its ready for shooting a teaser/sizzle reel. Now too answer your questions directly.... The intent would be to pitch the series to Animal Planet, Nat Geo, Discovery. They have not been commissioned as yet, however once I have something solid to pitch my goal is that it will be. The Executive Producers would be Jamie Brown - CEO of Frantic Films and Bernard Periatambee - VP of Factual Development at Frantic Films and yourself. I would stay involved as a Field Producer. I see the role of WA2S Films' as a partner in this, which is why I see you as one of the Producers, much of what you've already shot can be edited together with a bit of new shooting to put a teaser/sizzle together. Once we have something to pitch to the networks and hopefully sell WA2S & Frantic would work together in the weekly production. To put a sizzle together I would ask Frantic for funding and WA2S to provide access to film you've already shot. The first concept involving Steve Greig, Eldad and a variety of rescue organizations hits all those "buttons" we look at - The stakes - An animals life, Risk - failure, Reward - saving the animal and no one gets hurt. It needs a host to pull the story together and I can not think of anyone better than a guy Steve, he's great on camera as are his houseful of animals, (especially the pig - she's a scene stealer if I ever saw one). The second grittier show I see as being a bit "hard core" Animals that are abused need a voice, a loud voice, to bring attention to the brutality they've endured. It's horrifying what all abused animals go through but there are far too many cases where the abuser faces no ramifications. This is changing as many states are now treating abusers as felons - there is a chance to be the first show bringing focus to these monsters and holding them accountable for their actions. I want the viewer riveted to the screen - crying for pain & suffering the animal has endured, cheering when the abusers are arrested and feeling outraged when the abuser gets little to no punishment for their crime. Once again all the "buttons" are checked.....stakes - saving the animal and bringing the abuser to justice, Risks - no arrest -no punishment - abuser being free to abuse more animals, Reward - Saving the animal & finding it's forever home - Jail time for the abuser. I hope this provides some clarification as too what I'm wanting to do. As I said to Eugene yesterday there are some great stories here, stories needing to be told. Thank you for the opportunity to present this to you and I look forward to hearing your thoughts. All the best - Frann 204 509 695 M2 INC Frantic Films' Work Speaks For ItselfAs we do our homework on Frantic Films, red flags go up everywhere as we learn Frann Martins is a recently retired nurse with zero back-ground in documentary film production, and the shows Frantic Films created previously are mostly confected rubbish with no animal rescue shows being produced in their catalog. So, it was time for us to get busy and get to the bottom of how frantic Films conducts business with animal welfare professionals, so we created an outside partnership with Frann Martins so we could infiltrate the inner workings of Frantic Films and better understand how they deceive unsuspecting "characters". And we had every expectation of obtaining one of Frantic Films' "Shop Around Agreements". The following are those correspondence, as well as the partnership contract and Frantic Films' Shop Around.M2 INC <[email protected]> 4/20/16 to Tom Hi Tom - It was great speaking with you earlier today. Here's a link to Steve Greig - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/3dh5np9nf3lqxud/AAC9ilAx0E4RG-qMayoiy_kQa?dl=0 I've also included the link to a show I did for Frantic as an example of my work - I created, casted, scripted and assisted in the editing. It's currently being considered by Discovery. I'd love to hear your thoughts/comments https://vimeo.com/152582457 pw: frantic In speaking with Bernard he feels the host for the first concept needs to be in the field following the action as the rescues unfold. I don't disagree as I think it will certainly add a dynamic element. The character "Rhea" is the type of person we need to take the viewers on this journey. Bernard thinks this concept should be set very much like my Northern Emergency show - bringing the sense of urgency, passion and dedication to the screen. Look forward to speaking soon - Frann M2 INC <[email protected]>4/25/16 to Tom, Bernard Good morning - Good speaking with both of you this morning regarding the animal rescue shows. As discussed to move forward we need to put our relationship to paper. To best achieve this Tom meet Bernard - Bernard meet Tom. We are all in agreement both of these shows will be best served without a host but having those involved in the rescue guiding us through it. Tom has worked with a number of different rescues that actively go out into the "field" to rescue the stray, abandoned & abused animal. The following are groups/organizations I feel we need to have an agreement with to create solid show(s); Detroit Animal Control, Deb McDonald et al (We think she meant Michigan Humane Society - however, It was clear to us from the onset Frann Martins knew next to nothing about the animal rescue realm and nobody working with in its realm - except what she watched on YouTube and other social media - and we had to correct her on multiple occasions that its not the US Humane Society, and that they should be referred to as the Humane Society of the United States or HSUS. This still did not prevent her from making another huge gaff with the HSUS team when I did arrange a conference call with their media people) Animal Rescue Mission (ARM) - Richard Couto, Scotlund Haisley (ARC), Humane Society of the United States, Steve Hindi, Chris DeRose, Chain of Love (Florida Everglades), Marley's Mutts - Zach Snow, Devoted Barn - Melissa Borden Stray Rescue of St. Louis - Randy Grim Rescue group in; Houston, San Antonio, New York, etc. If I've missed any Tom please send me an updated list of who we're looking at. B, In terms of a contract I know its important for Tom's organization as a non-profit to get recognition as well as compensation. The long term relationships Tom has with many of these organizations is quite unique in that they treat him as a colleague rather than a Producer/Film crew, allowing him to "bird dog" a story and get us the access we need. We will also need access to previously shot footage not only to put a taster/sizzle together but also for possible use in episodes should the show(s) move forward. In addition to access it would be my hope Tom helps us produce, should the show(s) move forward. I think it best for the two of you to speak so I've included your contact info below. I believe Tom is available today, Tomorrow morning, Thursday and Friday. Tom McPhee Bernard Periatambee 416 324-8537 ext 122 Best - Frann * Side Note - Production companies do not care about any issues in your area of expertise - they will change their ideas and concepts infinitely, depending on the winds blowing from broadcasters like The Discovery Channel's Animal Planet (which is anything but). And you will be expected to blow in every direction they do. Or they don't need you. They have all the leverage over you if you let them - because you have a such a keen desire to be on TV.Tom McPhee <[email protected]> 4/26/16 to Bernard, Jeff, Frann, Courtney Dear Bernard & Frantic Team Thank you for spending so much time with me yesterday exploring this Dog rescue concept. WA2S Films is interested in collaborating with Frantic to produce this show. Initial concept resembling Deadliest Catch but focusing on a few dog rescues scattered between Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio - with Austin being the wild-card. Austin has figured out how not to have stray dog problems. The WA2S has been studying stray dogs for more than 5 years: http://www.WA2S.org/american-strays As I mentioned, WA2S Films has been filming regularly in Texas - Houston and San Antonio predominantly. There are compelling reasons to not just focus on Houston but to also include Dallas and San Antonio - experiencing similar stray numbers - but getting there differently. All these Texas cities have robust rescue communities - it allows the Deadliest Catch model to work - without having a Host present and gives us the greatest flexibility to tell the best stories possible. As to what WA2S Films and Tom McPhee want? It is my desire to produce and direct for this series and to be compensated fairly based on industry standards. WA2S films will be compensated for production work as the principal production partner for this show. WA2S Films will have no more than 3 people working on this series at any given time. WA2S Films will have an equity owner stake in the production participating in revenue sharing. The rescues we work with will be properly compensated up front. I will act is second camera, aerial camera, and high speed camera operator and act as producer and director for each episode. A first camera person, sound capture person as well as camera assistant will need to be hired. I will help deliver to the team the best possible story through beautiful picture and clean sound for every episode with Frantic handling all post work with input from the WA2S team helping supervise all the way through delivery to the network. Crew must be kept to a minimum. Camera gear must be micro if possible - dogs freak out around big camera gear. I look forward to discussing look and which cameras will be right moving forward. Gimbals are a must and should be taken into consideration when considering the camera. RED's and Canon C class cameras are probably going to be too big. I do have very specific thoughts about this. Lastly, I am not interested in any Chumley's in the production - meaning, we don't have any desire to confect plot lines around some planted rescuer to amp drama or conflict within the teams. It is not needed in this environment. The shows I believe can be hugely compelling with the work being done by the rescuers rescuing dogs and their personalities alone - it will not have to be artificially amped up. You asked if I have been pitching shows. The reason it is no is because I wanted whatever production company we were going to work with to come to me - because it would mean they get it! We set up WA2S Films to be a successful independent production entity focused on the animal welfare / rescue world independent of outside funding entity - so we didn't have to ask permission to do any of the work we do. WA2S videos are seen by 100,000 - 1500,000 NEW EYEBALLS EVERY SINGLE DAY, and that number is growing and compounding. I look forward to next. Tom McPhee <[email protected]> 5/3/16 to Bernard Good Morning Bernard, I am mapping out the next few weeks of events and would like to understand the time frame Frantic is currently working towards. Can you share with me what Frantic's timeline looks like? Cheers! Hi Tom, Nice to hear from you. I do hope you’re well. Our timeframe changes from development to development, but we usually aim for two – three months to take a project to a level where it’s ready to pitch. For the project we discussed initially – a dog rescue format where we follow three teams based in the US as they rescue abandoned or mistreated dogs, nurse them to health and give them homes – this is what we need for a pitch:
I know that Frann is discussing casting with you – she has a good eye for the kind of characters that will work for this kind of show: young (youthful), attractive, passionate, relatable, articulate expert etc …
Having spoken to our affiliate company in the US, they were particularly interested in the ‘Hope For Paws’ connection. As they have such a powerful online presence, having them involved will be very attractive to networks. Is there any way to include them in the pitch? It will really help to have them on board. Do you think this timeframe is possible Tom? B Tom McPhee <[email protected]> 5/3/16 to Bernard Thank you Bernard, This is very helpful, thank you. However, it does not specifically address my principal interest, that being our role in this timeline. I need to have a much clearer understanding of WA2S Films prospective time involvement as I am juggling multiple projects for the foreseeable future. What should I be preparing for? What will our role be at each stage, beginning with agreement and working though sizzle, pitch, pilot, and series. Thank you again Bernard. Cheers! *This is a game production companies like to play, they don't want you to really know how the process works, or the timeline of events to expect. They now have your nose ring properly fitted.2 INC <[email protected]> 5/3/16 to Bernard, Tom, Courtney Good morning - I really liked hope for Paws as well until I found out they have a fairly dark reputation that is also gaining an online following. Seems they like taking people's money for rescues that never happen as well as there are reports of them abandoning a rescued animal trapped in a crate in the Arizona sun, leaving it there to die. If they are featured on the show I can't imagine this story being far behind. As Tom will confirm there are lots of "hope for paws" types we can present as well if not better. F Tom McPhee <[email protected]> 5/3/16to M2 Hi Frann, I do have a call into Eldad. Although we have discussed this - I have no intention of not inviting everyone. There's only 2 possible outcomes and none are life threatening. However, having just written that - the show will not carry any weight from the actual rescue community - if Eldad is involved because of their tactics and perception by the rescue community. It may also hinder getting other prominent people and orgs to participate. For instance, Mel Borden of The Devoted Barn said she is more inclined to participate on this if asked because she respects our work and ethic, most of the animal welfare and rescue community are hesitant to work with "producers" because they often feel used. The World Animal Awareness Society has been approached by no less than 3 people who have had shows on TV and the relationship between the producers / broadcaster and the animal welfare / rescue professional dissolved because of the way the rescue was being treated and portrayed by the production. We have tons of background material around this phenomenon. Animal welfare non profits are frequently used and abused by the system. Just my 2 cents. * The World Animal Awareness Society & WA2S Films believes and has so written, that our mission is to get to the essence of human animal interaction by filming stories with animal welfare and rescue professionals. We have seen how so many of these selfless people are taken advantage of by unscrupulous producers chasing the broadcasters buck. We have been compiling interviews with various former network animal welfare rescue celebrities who shared with us countless stories of deception and loathsome practices - including editing techniques to get what they want, how they want it. They DO NOT CARE about real issues welfare professionals slave to address. The WA2S takes our responsibility to be a watch dog for the animal welfare and rescue industry segment very seriously and challenge all production companies to protect the animal rescue and welfare professional ranks. Look for an hour long interview with Animal Planet's Skunk Whisperer - Ned Bruha to be added to this discourse in the near future where we talk about the deception and manipulation of animal rescue / welfare professionals by Network TV producers.Bernard Periatambee <[email protected]> 5/3/16to me, Courtney Hi Tom, Sorry for not being clearer. Right now we are working on an agreement that outlines the points that you made in your email about being involved in the production of a show. The most important thing for the pitch right now, is putting together tape and bios of the characters that we want to cast. This has to be scripted into a sizzle that gives an idea of what the show will be like as well as selling the characters. I assumed that we’ll be using the production facility services of WA2S to do this and you and I would work on the script. Should the sizzle and pitch document get interest from a channel, we would go into further development and they might order a pilot. In this event, we’d work with you on the format and scripting of the piece and for filming we’d use WA2S services wherever possible to make it. I have to stress though that for pilot and series (basically anything that the channel is paying for) everything is subject to their approval. All equipment specifications, personnel CVs and main creative hires have to be submitted to them. Happy to discuss this over the phone if it helps. B Tom McPhee <[email protected]> 5/4/16 to Bernard, bcc: M2 Good Wednesday Morning B, Let me be even more specific. I need to have the agreement reviewed by our legal counsel and we have a shoot scheduled for Texas at the end of the month - first week of June. Specifically, what day should I expect to see an agreement? How fast do you need that agreement turned around? Does frantic intend to be in Texas with us at the end of the month to start shooting the sizzle? WA2S Films will be filming from May 27 through June 6th. What is the amount Frantic will be paying WA2S Films for work on the sizzle? WA2S Films is currently only setting aside time for pre - production and production. It is our understanding Frantic will be handling post production on the sizzle and the series if lit. These are the immediate, specific, practical timeline elements I am looking for. Thank you. Cheers! Bernard Periatambee <[email protected]> 5/4/16 to me, Courtney, Frann Hi Tom, I thought it would be easier to write my responses into your email below. Have a great day Good Wednesday Morning B, Let me be even more specific. I need to have the agreement reviewed by our legal counsel and we have a shoot scheduled for Texas at the end of the month - first week of June. We won’t be looking to shoot at the end of June. Before we film a sizzle, the agreement needs to be approved and we also need to cast the dog rescue groups and members of that group that we’ll be focussing on. I’ve copied in Courtney Hicks, the senior development producer here. She deals with agreements and liaises with our business affairs department in Winnipeg. As this isn’t a standard shop around agreement, it has more ‘co-pro’ elements it will take a couple of weeks to draft. Specifically, what day should I expect to see an agreement? How fast do you need that agreement turned around? We will try to get an agreement to you within two weeks and we can wait for you to turn it around. (Look for contract attachment below) Does frantic intend to be in Texas with us at the end of the month to start shooting the sizzle? WA2S Films will be filming from May 27 through June 6th. I don’t anticipate that we’ll be filming with you at this time. Given the amount of research and casting that Frann needs to do I’d rather take our time and nail the cast, script and purpose of the sizzle. Right now I’m thinking we could keep it simple though. Once we identify the best groups to feature and the key character within those groups, the sizzle could be as simple as interviews with the characters that show off their personalities and what they do, with lots of B roll of rescue stories that give a sense of how a story would unfold. What is the amount Frantic will be paying WA2S Films for work on the sizzle? I anticipate that we’d pay a facility fee for WA2S services – so a daily rate for camera and sound team and expenses - just as we would if we were hiring a crew for any other sizzle. WA2S Films is currently only setting aside time for pre - production and production. It is our understanding Frantic will be handling post production on the sizzle and the series if lit. Yes. We would deal with all the post production, delivery etc. 2 INC <[email protected]> 5/4/16 to Tom I think it sounds great - you and I seem pretty much on the same wave length. As for an agreement - simple and straight forward works for me. I don't like bullshit or people who screw others over, since you don't appear to possess either of those traits we'll be fine. As for shopping stuff around at other production houses I can go on a bit of a fishing expedition with one or two I know well and see what types of interest there is. Id rather not go too far with any of them until your deal is inked with Frantic -thoughts? M2 INC <[email protected]> 5/16/16to Bernard Hi Bernard - Just checking in to see if Tom's deal memo is imminent? I'm anxious to get started putting groups together for you to look at but can't really get the access I need without Tom on board. We spoke this morning at length about some the different rescue groups and locations. F More From Frantic Films For Your Pleasure
Contracts and Agreements - Sort Of...Tom McPhee <[email protected]> 5/11/16 to M2 Good Morning Frann! Are you ready to do this? Thoughts or questions? Email or phone, whatever works best for you. Or, go ahead and sign and send back and lets get busy building our little boutique entertainment agency. Let's get some folks signed up and start making TV. Cheers! WA2S Films - M2 Partnership AgreementWA2S Films Has An Interest To Control Access to Animal Rescuers & Help Protect Them From Predatory ProducersFrann Martins <[email protected]> 5/6/16 to me I spoke to USHS yesterday - Scotlund is gone but Rowdy is still there and he'll be great. They are willing to work with us, the challenge will be mobilizing with camera crew at short notice to film the team in action. The other challenge is some law enforcement agencies might not want to be filmed. (You can see quite clearly Frann has still not done her homework and nor does she care to.) Did you reach Richard from ARM? If not I'll call him. Also Zac Snow (it's SKOW, Fran) - where are things with him? I'm happy to call all these folks because I know you're busy, just don't want to double call. I have to stick to the concept and quality show I see in my head when I speak with Bernard. I'm optimistic he'll come around. If not and another production company jumps on board first so be it. I do feel a sense of loyalty to Frantic because of my relationship with Bernard and the CEO Jamie so I always give them first bite at everything.... F And then I get a call from Frann who relays: "the plans are changing because the network probably isn't going to be interested". This went on quite a bit - and we stopped trying to set meeting with prospects - because they were wasting everyone's time and energy. We felt, if they really didn't know what they wanted, and they still had not gotten us a contract - we'd embargo access to rescuers.Bernard Periatambee <[email protected]> 5/16/16 to me, Courtney, M2 Hi Tom, Sorry the agreement is taking a while. Because it isn’t a standard ‘shop around’ agreement – rather it involves getting exclusive access to your rescue groups for a set period and also involving your facility services in the shooting of materials – our team has to draft something new rather than looking to our standard templates. We’re on it though and will try to get something to you soon. B Bernard Periatambee <[email protected]> 6/8/16 to Tom, CourtneyHi Tom, Hope you’re well. Sorry about the delay on this, our business affairs department has been backed up working on contracts and deals on projects in production but they gave me this draft today based on our emails. Let me know what you think when you get a chance. Frantic Films Shop Around AgreementTom McPhee <[email protected]> 6/17/16 to BernardDear Bernard, I have had an opportunity to review our attorney's notes on the "shop around" you sent over. Based on their findings, I cannot recommend to the WA2S board I sign this agreement. Although we are a charity, and we do speculative work, based on our charter we are unable to do charity work for a commercial enterprise. We do speculative work where we retain 100% ownership. WA2S supports animal non profits the world over, and partnership fees help us do charitable work in this way. The WA2S cannot attach to any project without full producer's title, and the rights provided an equal partner, unless we are being brought on to an outside project not initiated by WA2S. Further, the WA2S currently has no less then 8 dog rescue related projects in play, and due to the lack of definition in this agreement to a specific project, we are unable to grant any sort of exclusivity at this time. There are other points of concern in the shop around - specifically mention of future agreements without those agreements being available to review prior to signing this agreement. If you wish to resubmit a fresh agreement that addresses these obstacles, I will be happy to explore the prospect of a partnership once again. Thank you for your time and every consideration. Cheers! Tom McPhee <[email protected]> 6/26/16 to M2 Frann, I wish to share some recent news articles with you as well as some facts about WA2S. When you have had an opportunity to review the WA2S facts and peruse the news - let me know. I have some questions I will pose then. First the facts:
And now the recent news articles: 'Make YouTube Great Again' CEO Wojcicki: 'I Hear You' At this year’s Vidcon, the YouTube fanfest in Anaheim, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki changed her tone. Last year, YouTube’s posture was powerful and unwavering. But this year, Wojcicki’s third at Vidcon, there was a noticeable shift. Wojcicki’s focus was on the community, more compassionate and connected, reaching out to solve problems and strengthen YouTube’s bond with its creator community “While TV networks are losing audiences, we’re growing across every screen,” said Wojcicki. “Today, more millennials are tuning into YouTube on mobile during primetime than any cable or broadcast TV network. It’s clear that digital media and traditional linear media are blending together.”: http://www.forbes.com/sites/stevenrosenbaum/2016/06/24/make-youtube-great-again-ceo-wojcicki-i-hear-you/#1c3f9177fbf4 MUST WATCH: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UVOK4SdVno Ms. Wojcicki: I see an opportunity to reinvent TV. When I look at the future of TV, I think it’s going to be on demand; it’s going to be mobile and cross-device; it’s going to be global; and it’s going to include a diverse set of content. YouTube’s goal is to build that platform and be the next-generation content and TV provider. YouTube’s Susan Wojcicki on Transforming the Video Service - YouTube boasts more than one billion users. Ms. Wojcicki says her biggest competitor is traditional television. YouTube remains a dominant force in online video, with more than 180 million unique viewers on traditional computers in February, compared with about 81 million viewers on the No. 2 service, Facebook Inc., according to research firm comScore. (The figures don’t include mobile devices, which the company says account for most YouTube views.) WSJ: What do online-viewing habits tell you about humanity? Ms. Wojcicki: People are much more interested in the regular person than we may have thought. That was the insight that led me to acquire YouTube in the first place. Before, we thought that users only wanted to see professional, finished types of content, but they actually want to see all types of content. There’s a very human element of YouTube, where people are just connecting with other people.: http://www.wsj.com/articles/youtubes-susan-wojcicki-on-transforming-the-video-service-1465358465 When it comes to distributing your digital video content, two things (and maybe only two things) are clear: First, if you are a content creator, you have more distribution and monetization options that offer scale than at any point in human history. Second, the industry is evolving at a rate that promises everything will have changed by this time next year. A clear and present divide In the wake of Amazon’s Video Direct launch, we heard one refrain across the internet: Look out, YouTube! http://www.recode.net/2016/6/9/11886568/video-platforms-amazon-youtube-content-creator-video-direct The Young Turks And The Future Of News On YouTube Former MSNBC commentator Cenk Uygur turned down a cable TV gig to focus on his online news network, The Young Turks, which now has 1.9 billion views. "In fact, we reach more 18- to 49-year-olds [in the U.S.] during prime time than the top 10 TV shows combined.” Wojcicki’s pitch was buoyed by the recent news that Interpublic Group’s media buying arm Magna Global is moving $250 million out from its fall TV ad budgets into YouTube. Surely, marketers are chasing this migration of mostly young viewers by diverting huge chunks of their television advertising budgets to digital video. YouTube has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of advertisers shifting spending from TV to chase viewers who have migrated to online video: http://www.wsj.com/articles/youtubes-quest-for-tv-advertising-dollars-1461343177 IT’S TIME TO PUT TV AND DIGITAL ON AN EVEN PLAYING FIELD - http://sites.nielsen.com/newscenter/its-time-to-put-tv-and-digital-on-an-even-playing-field/ Google just told advertisers that if they want to reach young people YouTube will need to take 24% of their TV budgets - The message from YouTube was loud and clear: YouTube — not TV — is where primetime entertainment lives: http://www.businessinsider.com/at-brandcast-google-tells-advertisers-to-shift-tv-money-to-video-youtube-2015-10 Millennials + YouTube: rethinking the definition of “advertising” - YouTube is certainly killing it with millennials as an entertainment channel, reaching more 18- to 34-year-olds than any cable network in the US. But to a millennial, YouTube isn’t all fun and games: 1 in 3 say they use it as a news source and 2 out of 3 millennials agree they can find a YouTube video to learn anything they want: http://www.skidmorestudio.com/millennials-and-youtube/ YouTube Takes Manhattan - “We don’t do notes or tell people what they should be doing with their work,” he said. “We enable them to do the best work they can as they define it.” http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/13/business/media/youtube-takes-manhattan-.html Again, I would like to send you a series of questions based on your consumption of this material before we speak tomorrow. And, I need to move the call to any time after 5:30p tomorrow - as I have a shoot all day. Let me know when you are able to speak in the evening and I'll look for notice of you reading this material and sending you questions some time later today, early tonight. Cheers! Tom McPhee <[email protected]> 6/26/16 to M2 F, I am shooting this week. Only available in the evenings. Do not move forward in any capacity with any US related animal shows until we sort out your conflict. I cannot authorize any more interactions on behalf of animal programming with Frantic until you sort out this conflict. We have an agreement. You do not have one with Frantic. WA2S Entertainment or not. You need to understand you are part of this family now. You seemed to have forgotten that during your intro and note to HSUS. WA2S is your passport to working with US animal non profits. You will not be able to meet your goals in the US without your passport. Let me know when you are ready to sort this out. You need to look at the WA2S as a union of sorts for the greater US animal welfare community. Hopefully that visual helps you understand a little of the gravity of your predicament. Have you reviewed the info I sent you and are you ready for the questions yet? Talk soon. Cheers! T Frann Martins <[email protected]> 6/26/16 to me Hi Tom - The agreement we have is as partners, you're not my boss, you're my partner but at the moment this does not feel like a partnership. Your comment about not authorizing interactions is confusing as we're supposed to partners and wanting to ask me questions about what? The only questions we should have for each other is what do we need to do to move these projects forward and get these shows sold- nothing else is relevant. I don't want any conflict with you but you need to appreciate the other work I do and be respectful of the relationships I must maintain to continue it. My goal here is too increase exposure as too what's going on with animals and those working to put an end to the cruelty & abuse many endure. To meet that goal we must get something on TV. I appreciate your points about YouTube but I'm not doing this for YouTube. I'm going bigger. If at some point in the future if YouTube should enter the same ballpark as TV I'll happily switch my focus. I'd like to put this behind us and move forward. Hopefully you do as well. As I mentioned I'm free Tuesday morning but then too sporadically to pinpoint a time until Friday. Best - Frann Tom McPhee <[email protected]> 6/27/16 to Frann F, It has been stunning - you not understanding what I am communicating to you - for weeks now. And I am in the communications business. So, to enable better communication between us I am going to ask you a series of questions to diagnose the disconnect So, here are the questions: Why did you stand me up in Toronto after having a time set to meet - and think I would be able to respond while in session? Do you know if you actually did what we planned on - you would have had 3 hours to meet with me? To be honest - this was a slap in the face and I would never have treated a partner let alone a new partner like this. If it were reversed I would have done everything possible to make you feel welcome in my country. Your lack of welcoming and meeting me in Toronto - less than an hour from your home speaks volumes about how you value our partnership. Truly amazing really. How many TV shows do you have on TV? Now or ever? Why would you think I am suggesting we target YouTube as a platform? The WA2S needs no help to master YouTube. And to think it does not already out weigh conventional TV shows your lack of understanding of the market. Yet, all your research is all predicated on what you find on YouTube. ie: we should use Eldad because he has such a massive YouTube following? Your logic makes no sense at all How many times over the last 10 years have you been in the field filming animal rescues? Why would you not listen to an award-winning entity that has been filming dog rescues for more than 10 years and try to tell us where the action is? Why do you think you know more about USA dog rescues then WA2S by only watching YOUTUBE videos? Why do you assume every piece of information I send to you is about casting? Ie, Why did you assume I am suggesting we cast any particular person from the information I sent to you regarding Dallas? Why are you still waiting on Frantic before pitching other production entities? What is a greater priority to serve? Your partnership or an outside relationship with a TV production company you do not have a contract with? Are you prepared to fund half the ongoing development of the catalog - I expect not and so it will be the responsibility of the WA2S to pay for, build and maintain the catalog and WA2S Entertainment will have use rights. Why should you have access to our brothers and sisters in the animal welfare and rescue business in the US when you've shown more than once your lack of understanding and respect for it? Do you have any experience whatsoever in producing films about animal welfare and rescue? How many times should we expect there to be changes in the direction of the American Dog Rescue show? Already there have been many. Use a host, don't use a host, etc... What do you base your decisions on for making a show concerning American Dog Rescue? What will you do to insure it is not Chumley - laden? Why do you assume anything WA2S posts on YouTube or any platform has any bearing on TV? Why do you make comments such as that? Yet, I have told you numerous times TV is different from the the internet and they are not the same. Why would we post content meant for TV on the internet? Why do you not understand the content we present on the internet is just for the internet. I sent you a clip of throw away content from Austin of the dog hoping in the car - you state drone good... can't use... None of it was TV ready - it was all throw away even the drone shots - those drone shots were the throw away from the shoot. Why are you only looking for cast that have YouTube content? Why do you think anyone we might want to cast has anything resembling what you need to help cast? ie, headshot, speaking on camera, etc. Have you begun to assemble cast through YouTube videos? ie, has Frantic received any footage or clips from you to use in a taster reel? Do you think you can cast a dog rescue through YOUTUBE videos alone? What other production companies have you presented Animal CSI and American Dog Rescue concept too? If no others why? What are you waiting for? There is no indication whatsoever that I will approve any deal moving forward with Frantic based on their first pass of the contract. And as a partner, I have the right to decline a bullshit offer. Have you contacted HBO yet? If not. Why not? Are you only looking at existing relationships you have for pick up or are you going to expand to one of nearly a hundred other prospects? How many deals have you put together with any other production entity other than Frantic Films? Please don't misconstrue the following statement: YouTube's numbers: 1 billion daily users. If you don't think non traditional distribution partners like YouTube aren't killing traditional TV you are in LALA land. Traditional outlets are pouring money into these new delivery mechanisms because they are killing the traditional outlets and they don't want to be left behind. If you were't on the boat 3 - 5 years ago - you've already missed it. It appears you didn't even take the time to review the material I took the time to send you yesterday did you? You thought I was suggesting we move in that direction - you couldn't be more wrong - I told you I don't need a partner for that. I was trying to show you the massive resources we already receive and the global audience we have and that we take absolutely no shit from third tier production entities from Canada who have no experience in this realm thinking they can entice us. WA2S does not need help in that way as you assumed. And we sure the fuck aren't giving a god damned thing away. We did not partner with you to accept shit for scraps from a third tier partner that needs a US partner just to get on TV in the US Seriously Frann. Stop running around with your head cut off. I will not present someone who continues to show their complete lack of knowledge of the animal rescue / welfare world to the leaders and prospective partners in this realm. Hey, let's get Zack Skow for host - wait, no host. How many times did it change? I created 2 shows of my own that I sold, produced, directed and starred in on Canadian TV no less. And one show had my name in the title: Tom McPhees' Rescue Journal. My 2 shows played back to back on Monday nights at 8 & 8:30p nationally in 2009. Again, I ask you; how many TV shows do you have on the air - now or ever? As your partner in this enterprise, I cannot recommend we chase any more opportunities with Frantic until we see a better contract from them and something bordering on respect. Just like a bad cast member - I believe we move on to other prospects. There are literally hundreds and Frantic has given me zero reasons to partner up with them. As a partner in this enterprise I cannot recommend partnering with Frantic based on what I've seen and I sure wouldn't recommend any US non profit entity to work with them either. I want real thought out answers to these questions before we move on and speak on the phone. If you don't want to go through this exercise I will be forced to believe you do not take this partnership seriously. Have a great Monday and a productive week. I look forward to speaking with you some time in the evening this week when you have time and after you have answered my inquiry. Cheers! It does not make that much of a difference cost-wise if 30 minutes or 60, yet the payout is substantial. |
