This dog was named America for the Bank of America building that she has lived behind for months on the north east side of Houston and was rescued not a day too soon as Hurricane Harvey flooded Texas. America had an old ragged bed to lie in, and a village of rescuers bringing her food and water every night. No one knew where she had been prior to making her home behind the bank, but she was there now and wasn’t going anywhere. Sheena Poole contacted Houston K-911 to see if they might be able to help with vet bills and adoption of America if she could trap her. Sheena had trapped America once recently, however, genius that she is, she escaped from the space in which she was being held. America made her way back to her bank home; feeders continued to feed her in hopes of a better solution being revealed. So we tagged along with Sheena, Anna Barbosa and Michelle for the assessment. America did not disappoint; she was hunkered down beneath a bush in an effort to stay as cool as possible in 106 heat index weather. With the flurry of people around, America took leave of her space and moved on to the underside of a red pick-up truck in the Home Depot parking lot right next to the bank. This was another of her favorite resting spots. Anna and Michelle determined that America could not be left in this heartbreaking existence and would be accepted into the Houston K-911 program. Next up, how to get her! While America was used to people being near her space to leave food, she did not trust them enough to interact with them. The situation would require a trap. This was a very busy Saturday afternoon at the bank and in this parking lot, so the safest scenario would be to wait until dusk when it became less busy. Help the stray dogs at risk in Houston! Hurricane Harvey is wreaking havoc on Houston and the: community, stray, abandoned and homeless dogs are paying a heavy price from this unprecedented disaster. There is no hope for paws in so many cases today.
The American Strays 2030 Project team was in Houston Texas from August 13 through August 24, 2017 for the sole purpose of quantifying the stray dog epidemic currently plaguing about 2 thirds of Houston city proper. Using open source GPS tracking software, GoPro cameras mounted to the front of the survey vehicle and 2 spotters taking pics and video to help verify the dogs being found on the streets - the team has been able to determine hundreds of dogs at risk right right now in Houston. The purpose for the American Strays K9 survey is to better understand the dynamics of the free roaming dog population in Houston, TX. The GPS data of the dogs along with the video and pics are used to help create various initiatives to help humanely solve the dog population issues. Images of the dogs are tagged with GPS data so the team can quickly locate them time after time to verify various interventions deployed actually work or to save the dogs through rescue. n most cases the dogs belong to the people who's house they are in front of or close to, so we give our partner rescues the information to help educate the owners to be better guardians. Many instances the dog is truly a homeless dog. And when the dog is truly in peril, ie, injured, nursing puppies, severe mange, etc. It's rescued asap. The WA2S Films team will be rolling out new dog rescue videos of many dogs in peril we filmed while in Houston. Here is a perfect example of a dog that would have died due to Hurricane Harvey if the WA2S had not been working with Houston rescue Forgotten Dogs of The Fifth Ward Project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rk9KtPVsnAg However, the stakes are very high now - as you can see from the video - hundreds of dogs are truly at risk outside due to the perilous circumstances created by the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. We have the locations of where all these dogs should be and we can check with owners in their neighborhoods and look to rescue the dogs that are now suffering due to their new post Hurricane Harvey reality. But we need your help! You can see the value of having this type of fresh data to help keep so many animals alive. If we know about them - have identified them - we can save them! No Hope For Stray Mangy German Shepherd Paws Until Forgotten Dogs Rescued Him! Operation Houston 3.08/23/2017
This is an Operation Houston Stray Dog City Hope For Paws dog rescue story that happened right before Hurricane Harvey! Around the next corner, though dark, we could clearly see the shaded image of quite a large dog next to a dumpster. It was getting dark in the 5th Ward which means outsiders must move with caution through the neighborhood. Alicia of Forgotten Dogs Of The Fifth Ward Project, out of respect for resident’s wishes, won’t stop and put food on their lawns for the loose dogs while they are present. She wants to preserve her privilege of feeding dogs in their neighborhood. So we did bypass a handful of loose dogs. The headlights revealed what appeared to be a German Shepherd; a very skinny, emaciated even, Shepherd with an awful case of mange. This was a dog in peril. He was not going to last much longer in the streets had he been left. This was a situation where though there was no space for him, Kelle couldn’t leave him; he needed rescue or he would die very soon. Kelle quickly figured out where she would put him at her house, and began networking for this dog’s future. Kelle named this very lucky dog Jonah. Alicia immediately posted a photo of Jonah on Facebook and began looking for a Shepherd rescue that might be able to take on this dog that needed so much help. He first needed medical help. Kelle would keep him as a medical foster for a few weeks in order to get him out of danger. He needed treatment for his mange, and even trickier, she needed to very slowly feed Jonah so he can bulk up. He was skin and bones. Once Jonah was in the car with Kelle, he was a peaceful dog; he knew he was safe, and didn’t have to forage for food; he didn’t have to be on guard against people and other animals who meant him harm. It never ceases to amaze me the many times I’ve seen this happen with a stray dog that has been rescued. This dog had obviously experienced a difficult life in the streets. Because of this I could absolutely understand if he were anxious, angry, or mean, but he was not – he was a lover! Jonah is in Kelle’s care right now, and after 3 weeks of medical care and good nutrition will be transferred to Chip n Snip German Shepherd Rescue. There they will prepare Jonah for adoption to a wonderful forever family.
