Be the Solution: Make the San Antonio Pet Promise!

San Antonio Pet Promise PSA Series
Goal: To fund the production and distribution of high-quality PSAs that change cultural behavior regarding pet ownership. The stray dog crisis in San Antonio isn’t just an animal control issue—it’s a community crisis. The San Antonio Pet Promise is a groundbreaking Public Service Announcement (PSA) series designed to shift the culture of pet ownership in our city, San Antonio.

Through cinematic storytelling and direct community engagement, this series challenges residents to make the "Pet Promise": a commitment to spay / neuter, secure their property, and treat pets as family, not property.

The Pledge:  "I promise to keep them safe. I promise to keep them healthy. I promise to love them for life.  I Promise!"

What Your Donation Supports:
  • Production Costs: Funding professional cinematography, sound, and editing to create broadcast-quality PSAs.
  • Media Buy & Distribution: Getting these messages on local TV, radio, and targeted social media ads to reach the neighborhoods that need them most.
  • Community Materials: Printing "I Promised" yard signs and window decals to create visible community support

Partnering with Raymond Najera brings a profound level of gravity and "lived experience" to this campaign. Given the tragic history and the specific challenges faced in San Antonio, these PSAs need to balance urgent public safety with the compassionate steps of responsible guardianship.

Here is a proposed list of 26 one-minute bilingual PSA topics, categorized by their primary objective:

Phase 1: Prevention and Public Safety / Focusing on immediate community safety and the legacy of Ramon Najera.
  • The "Why" Behind the Fence: Explaining how secure containment prevents tragedies and protects both neighbors and pets.
  • Tethering Laws in SA: A clear guide on San Antonio’s specific ordinances regarding tethering and why "chains aren't homes."
  • The Danger of "Free-Roaming": Why letting a dog "patrol" the neighborhood is a liability, not a luxury.
  • Reading Canine Body Language: How to spot signs of aggression or fear in a dog before an interaction turns dangerous.
  • Reporting Without Fear: How and when to contact 311 or ACS (Animal Care Services) regarding aggressive behavior.
  • The Responsibility of the Leash: Why a leash is a lifeline, even for "friendly" dogs.

Phase 2: Fundamental Health & Legality / Ensuring pets are legally accounted for and physically healthy.
  • Microchipping: The Invisible Thread: How a tiny chip ensures a dog returns home if they escape.
  • The Importance of Spay/Neuter: Addressing overpopulation and reducing hormonally driven aggression.
  • Bilingual Vaccination Guide: Navigating the mandatory Rabies shot and the "core" vaccines (Distemper/Parvo).
  • The Cost of "Free": A realistic breakdown of the financial commitment required for a pet.
  • San Antonio Heat Safety: Specific tips for keeping pets cool and hydrated during Texas summers.
  • The "City Pet License" Simplified: Why registration matters for city resources and safety tracking.

Phase 3: Behavioral Awareness / Building a better relationship between the guardian and the dog.
  • Socialization vs. Exposure: How to properly introduce your dog to the world so they don't react with fear or aggression.
  • Positive Reinforcement Basics: Why "Alpha" training is outdated and how rewards build a safer, more loyal dog.
  • The Bored Dog Problem: How mental stimulation prevents destructive behaviors and "fence fighting."
  • Children and Dogs: Teaching kids how to respect a dog’s space to prevent bites in the home.
  • Multi-Dog Households: Managing pack dynamics safely to prevent "scuffles" from escalating.
  • Understanding the Breed (Not the Myth): Focusing on individual dog needs rather than stereotypes.

Phase 4: Community and Crisis Management / How to handle high-stress situations and support the neighborhood.
  • What to do if a Dog Escapes: Immediate steps to take to secure the animal and alert the community.
  • The "Good Neighbor" Protocol: Dealing with barking complaints and property line boundaries.
  • Breaking the Cycle of Neglect: Identifying the signs of animal cruelty and how to intervene safely.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Including your pet in fire, flood, or weather emergency plans.
  • Finding a Lost Pet in SA: Navigating the local shelter system and social media groups effectively.
  • The Senior Pet: Specific care for aging dogs to ensure their final years are dignified.
  • Fostering: The Bridge to Life: How San Antonio citizens can help the stray crisis by opening their homes temporarily.
  • Ramon’s Legacy: A concluding message from Raymond on how collective responsibility ensures no other family suffers a similar loss.
