Rescue of Starving Thin BEAUTIFUL Husky Baby Mama Maxine By Forgotten Dogs Of The Fifth Ward Project1/28/2016 Once in the examining room it was determined that Maxie weighed only 34 pounds, though a resident of the street she was found on had seen Maxie looking very healthy and an appropriate weight a couple of months ago when she turned up; she will be well fed now and has plenty of room to gain weight and fill out. Blood was drawn to test for heart-worm. Heart-worm is a devastating parasite spread by mosquito bites and though easily prevented by a caring owner, it is difficult and costly to treat for those dogs on the street that aren’t lucky enough to have the preventatives. Dr. Palmer came and checked Maxie, in particular her red and swollen teets, which now were leaking milk. What she determined was that Maxie had not nursed her puppies in anywhere from 1-3 days and with nowhere for the milk to go, it was building up. Fortunately there was no infection! What Maxie needed was food and a lot of TLC. The best news was that the heart-worm test was negative! Share Maxie's story to help find her a new home, and support the efforts of dozens of animal rescues in Houston through the Operation Houston Fund: http://www.WA2S.org/donate Did you know about the Puppy Crying App that's used in this video to help find puppies? WA2S spent time with Kelle Davis, Yvette Holzbach and Holly Kelch, volunteers with Forgotten Dogs of the 5th Ward in Houston, TX and filmed what is all in a day's work for them.
Our first stop was an outreach follow up visit to a Mexican family whose dogs had recently been found running in the streets of their neighborhood. Kelle had offered to assist them in caring for the dogs and getting them spayed and neutered, but the family did not respond. Kelle spoke with the matriarch of the family in Spanish, to try to determine the whereabouts of a white Pyrenees that had been seen with her dogs, and to urge her to bring her dogs in to their house as the city was sweeping neighborhoods and her family's pets would be picked up if they were in the streets. A few streets over we came across a puppy running loose in the street. We pulled over so that Kelle could leave some food for it. Though skittish, the puppy was interested in the food and succumbed to temptation. Kelle was able to secure the puppy, which was a sweet girl. She joined us in the car for her freedom ride!
