WA2S Films rode along with South Side Street Dogs' Erika and Sandro Gamez on their route in Sunnyside to check on neighborhood strays.
We followed Erika, armed with food, water and a first-aid kit, into a house to investigate. What we found was a tattered female dog lying un-moving amongst bits of torn up foam. Upon closer inspection Erika realized that this dog was mOma, a stray that she knows! mOma recognized Erika's soothing voice and accepted some much needed water. It was clear however, that mOma was not in good health and needed to be taken immediately to the VCA Animal Emergency Hospital. Sandro had the daunting task of carrying mOma out of the abandoned house to their waiting vehicle. mOma had no strength so her entire weight was on Sandro is if she were liquid. He wrapped his arms under her front legs, lifted her, and once he removed foam pieces that were stuck to her leg realized that she had wounds that were open and leaking bodily fluids. Erika surmised that mOma was likely going into shock. With great care Sandro removed mOma from the house and placed her in a crate in their vehicle for transport to VCA where she would be initially treated. mOma was featured in the news during filming of Operation Houston #StrayDogCity: USA TODAY - Drones being used to track Houston's stray dogs Houston Chronicle - That drone overhead is looking for stray dogs |
