The WA2S kicked off the expedition to Houston by filming a music video to go with a new song that Arthur Yoria is writing for American Strays: A Tale of Animal Warfare, our documentary that is currently in final days of production. As the team was finishing up, Natalie from Hot Mess Pooches Rescue collaborated with Kelle Davis of Forgotten Dogs of the Fifth Ward to aid an injured dog that had apparently been hit by a car a month ago. Chason and Kate from Nova Dog Rescue had just picked up the dog and would bring him to Eastwood Park for an evaluation by Kelle. Upon examination of the tan Chihuahua Kelle determined that Lito (short for Frijolito) had little or no use of his rear legs. He had sores where he had been dragging his bottom and lacked any muscle mass in his back legs. Apparently this dog had been owned for a time but had been kicked out to the street when there were too many puppies to manage – and then was hit by a car. Some kind soul called Chason asking for help for the dog. If only it had been sooner. The agreement was the Lito would be in foster care with Chason and Kate, and would be taken to the vet the next morning for evaluation. Forgotten Dogs of the Fifth Ward would fund the vet bills. Kelle thought it quite possible that neither leg could be saved and they may have their first wheelchair dog. Once evaluated and a plan for care was created, Lito would be in foster care until he could be adopted out. Everyone had hope for Lito. It is with a heavy heart that I share in closing, the results of Lito’s examination. It revealed four fractures in his pelvis that had healed abnormally. His bladder was close to rupturing because it was so full, and he had no control of his bowels, which were somewhat impacted. He had no feeling or control from the waist down. This was a rescue of mercy. Lito had too many injuries stacked against him and they made the difficult decision to let him go. He spent his last night with lots and lots of love from Chason and Kate. “Fosters matter. Lito matters. His short life means something and his story keeps our resolve strong. Thank you Lito.” Kelle Mann Davis blog post written by Deanna McPhee This video was created with the financial assistance of donors across the globe including: Associate Producer, Diane Donnelly of The Donnelly Group.
