On this episode of The Dog Saviors, squatter Homer Moore, a man living in a dilapidated house on the east side of Detroit that has no running water or electricity takes care of a stray puppy living in and around a burned out house right across the street.
The WA2S Films team used hidden cameras to uncover the whereabouts of the little puppy Homer named Miss Mayfield. We’ve been deeply moved by these two, so it’s time to tell their story. This is the link to Jarrod's rescue video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kyBWgyJgxrk American Strays Project team leader Tom McPhee has been surveying Detroit for stray, homeless and roaming dogs for the American Strays 2030 Project (a scientific means of determining the number of stray dogs on the streets in large urban spaces) when he spotted a little brindle pit puppy in the driveway of an abandoned, burned out house. This puppy appeared to be on her own and likely wouldn’t last very long if she did not get help. The puppy was a wily one and not interested in making friends with anyone though. Tom took some time to get to know Homer and hear his story, including his connection to Miss Mayfield - whom Homer named. For six days the WA2S team tried to organize the pick of up of this beautiful puppy, but a trap was needed; no one could catch her by hand. It took time and organization of schedules to arrange for Lori Briggs, dog rescuer extraordinaire, to bring her trap to Detroit, but it was confirmed for that Saturday, the day I joined the expedition. When we pulled up to the burned out house the puppy was in the driveway but ran away when we got too near. She was sweet, but frightened, and looked to be only a few months old. This is an open case - and many of these dogs need new homes immediately. Although the Paulding County Dog Warden agreed the dog named Belle needed to be rescued by attaining a warrant, the Warden never returned with a warrant. As of Thursday afternoon July 5, 2018 the situation with these dogs HAS NOT changed. These owners will be glad to give up some of the dogs. If you think these dogs need to be rescued, please be a part of the solution and share their story with every foster and dog rescuer you know. THE DOG SAVIORS Season 1 Episode 11 After 4 Years Homeless Pit Bull Can't Wait for Love From New Family! Mary & Mike are "Dog Ambassadors" in Detroit. they watch over and try to help the dogs on the street. They do this by providing food, and attention, and by networking the dogs out to rescue groups. Meet Buster, the white Pit Bull who has been living in an abandoned lot after he was himself abandoned. Mary gave Buster a home with straw, and brings him food water, and bones everyday, along with some other dogs in the area. Mike takes photo's frequently of the dogs on the street as well as the animals at The Devoted Barn, and he has been doing both for years. Mike along with Mary have worked cooperatively with Melissa Borden and The Devoted Barn to systematically get these dogs into better homes. Colleen, and her son Nathan work closely with The "Barn Family" as fosters and adopters of dogs. And Colleen felt a special need to help Buster. Although Buster was on a chain, it was so he could be kept in one place until he could be relocated. Buster had been in this situation for more than 3 years waiting for his furever home, and the day the chains could come off. In Detroit it is illegal to tether a dog like Buster was, however, it goes to show that this law is not enforced.
